China’s Ministry of Agriculture and Ministry of Finance initiated the construction of the first batch of Agriculture Industrial Technology Systems. National Rice Industrial Technology System is one of them.
Basic tasks of National Rice Industrial Technology System are as follow:
Based on the development demand of the rice industry, gather quality resources, conduct generic & key technology research, integration, test and demonstration; collect and analyze dynamics and information of the rice industry and its technology development, systematically deliver industrial technology development planning and industrial economic policy research, provide consultations for government decision making and information service for the society; carry out technology demonstration and service.
The construction of State Key Laboratory of Rice Biology was completed on December, 2006. China National Rice Research Institute and Zhejiang University are in charge of its management and operation. Dr. Qian Qian serves as Director while Dr. Yang Changdeng, Prof. Zhou Xueping and Dr. Zhuang Jieyun as Deputy Director.
State Key Laboratory of Rice Biology focuses on significant scientific problems and applicable researches concerning rice production, including rice functional genomics, genetics of germplasm improvement & innovation and mechanism of growth and development. The lab has successfully cloned some agronomically important genes such as genes controlling rice tillering and gelatinization temperature, etc.
The laboratory has achieved a number of national-level awards, including one first prize and four second prizes of National Scientific and Technological Progress, one second prize of National Award for Technological Invention and one second prize of State Natural Science Award. Its research results have been published on Nature, Science, Nature Genetics, PNAS, Plant Cell, Plant Journal, J Virol and etc.
MOA Key Laboratory of Rice Biology and Genetic Breeding
MOA Key Laboratory of Rice Biology and Genetic Breeding, affiliated to China National Rice Research Institute, was established in 2011 with the focus on the following four fields.
1. Rice germplasm resources evaluation and developing: developing fine and multi-resistant germplasm materials, providing parent and intermediate materials for new varieties’ breeding, building a platform for breeding materials.
2. Rice functional genomics and molecular breeding foundation: establishing a molecular-designing breeding platform, conducting gene cloning and functional study of plant type, rice quality, disease and pest resistance, etc.
3. Rice breeding theories and molecular breeding application: physiological basis for high-yielding rice, innovative theoretical methods of rice breeding, developing new varieties with high production, high quality and high resistance.
4. Rice molecular breeding materials and information sharing: promoting a national-level rice breeding exchanges and communications.
Zhejiang Key Laboratory of Super Rice Research
Zhejiang Key laboratory of Super Rice Research is affiliated to China National Rice Research Institute. Its major research focuses are:
1. Super rice germplasm resources evaluation and innovation: exploring and developing favorable genes of super rice; Innovative research on new materials for breeding.
2. Theoretical Research on super rice breeding and molecular breeding: fundamental research on essential genetic mechanism of agronomic trait, production and resistance.
3. Applied research on super rice molecular breeding: developing new super rice varieties with high potentials on large scale application of molecular breeding.
4. Mechanized high-yielding cultivation techniques of super rice and its theoretical research: combining farming machinery with agronomy technic, integrating super rice high-yielding cultivation techniques and conducting research on completely mechanical production techniques.
The construction of Zhejiang Rice Science Innovation Service Platform was approved by Zhejiang Provincial Government on November, 2006. Supported by China National Rice Research Institute, eleven prefecture-level agricultural academies along with Zhejiang Wuwangnong Seeds Co. Limited and other private companies cofounded the platform. Subordinate to CNRRI, the platform has four centers: Molecular Breeding R&D Center, Hybrid Rice R&D Center, Conventional Rice R&D Center and Technique Extension Service Center.
The platform has been integrating and optimizing human resources, equipment and germplasm resources through its mutual-benefit mechanism; promoting achievement transformation and popularization through technical service and base construction; enhancing innovation efficiency through resource, equipment and technical sharing; increasing the overall innovation capability for Zhejiang Province through collaboration and gathering strength. The ultimate goal of the platform is to build a strategic alliance among rice industry, academia and the research community.
